To understand Yoga Therapy and how it is used in healing, one must understand its origins and context in terms of healing, for this we must turn to Ayurveda. Yoga is the sister science to Ayurveda and as such is used therapeutically in Ayurveda. Yoga was rarely taught outside the context of Ayurveda in ancient times and is seen as a complete science of life, primarily a science of healing. It is a complete system of health in which diet, herbs, lifestyle recommendations as well as Yogic practices, customized to suit each individual according to their unique constitution, in order to improve physical, mental, emotional and spiritual well-being, is used.
"The three - body, mind and soul - are like a tripod.
The world stands by their combination: in them everything abides. This combination exists for the sake of the Purusha or conscious being.
It is the subject matter of Ayurveda for which the teachings of Ayurveda have been revealed."
- Charaka Samhita, Sutrasthana I 46-47
